A four-card open straight has space available at either end to finish the hand; for example, a hand of 4-5-6-7 can complete the straight with either a 3 or an 8. The center of an inside straight must be filled to complete the hand; 4-6-7-8 requires a 5 to become straight. With twice as many open straights, the player has a stronger chance.
